PHILADELPHIA -- Garrett Richards helped Mike Trout have a perfect homecoming trip. Richards tossed a five-hitter over seven sharp innings and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Wednesday to sweep a two-game interleague series. Trout went 1 for 4 with a triple, walk and stolen base. The two-time All-Star went 2 for 9 in his first series against the team he rooted for growing up. Trout grew up in nearby Millville, New Jersey. More than 4,000 people from the small town came to see him Tuesday night, and there were plenty of fans wearing No. 27 Angels jerseys in the stands again. "It was a quick two days, two wins," Trout said. "Its been a blast. I was feeling something special just driving to the stadium." Richards (4-0) struck out eight with no walks and lowered his ERA to 2.42. Ernesto Frieri pitched a perfect eighth, and Joe Smith finished off the five-hitter for his fifth save in seven tries. "I was keeping the ball down in the zone," Richards said. "My two-seam fastball was working well. Mainly I got ahead with my fastball then kept them off balance with breaking balls." Phillies starter A.J. Burnett (2-3) laboured through five innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. He struck out six and walked five. "Im not a negative person, so Im not going to pout," Burnett said. The Angels have won five of six to move a season-high three games above .500 at 21-18. The Phillies have lost three straight and seven of nine to fall a season-worst four games under .500 at 17-21. The Angels got a run in each of the first three innings. Richards did the rest. Albert Pujols hit a two-out double in the first and scored on a single by Raul Ibanez, the former Phillies All-Star who heard familiar "Rauuuul" chants when he came to the plate. Ibanez helped the Phillies win the NL pennant in 2009 and was a fan favourite during three seasons in Philadelphia. Efren Navarro had an RBI single with two outs in the second to give the Angels a 2-0 lead. Erick Aybar ripped an RBI double to right-centre in the third to make it 3-0. But Burnett escaped more trouble with the bases loaded and no outs. He struck out Grant Green and retired Luis Jimenez on a double play. Richards pitched out of his only jam in the sixth after Chase Utleys second double put runners at second and third with one out. Richards then struck out Ryan Howard and retired Marlon Byrd on a soft liner. Trout led off the seventh with a triple off reliever Mike Adams. He dove headfirst into third base and got up to cheers. Adams left him there, though. He fanned Pujols and Ibanez, walked Aybar and retired Hank Conger on a pop-up. Trout thought about stealing home. "It was in the back of my mind," he said. "I was looking in the dugout. Itd be dangerous, though, if the hitter didnt know." The Phillies are 6-11 at home. Theyve scored two runs or fewer at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park five times in 17 games. Theyre 1-8 in interleague play. "We need to do a better job driving the ball at our park," manager Ryne Sandberg said. "This is considered a hitters park. Teams come in here swinging. We need to step up our hitting." NOTES: Pujols tied Lou Gehrig for 33rd on the all-time list with his 534th career double. He snapped an 0-for-15 slump with the hit. ... Of Trouts 42 hits, 21 are for extra bases. ... Jimmy Rollins singled in the sixth for his 2,211th career hit, tying Ed Delahanty for third on the clubs all-time list. Rollins is 24 shy of passing Mike Schmidt for first place. ... The Phillies are off Thursday before opening a three-game series at home vs. Cincinnati on Friday. Kyle Kendrick (0-3, 3.98) faces Homer Bailey (3-2, 4.72). The Angels start a four-game set at Tampa on Thursday. Tyler Skaggs (3-1, 4.14) opposes Erik Bedard (2-1, 3.38). Adidas Gazelle China Wholesale. Hill was suspended for violating the performance enhancers policy two years ago, missing four games. He then missed the first four matches last season because of a substance abuse violation. The Giants are expected to release Hill when his latest suspension ends. HHill has played in just 24 games since being signed in 2012 as an undrafted free agent.ddddddddddddHe had two interceptions, returning one for a TD, and played well late last season. A New Jersey product, Hill had a solid college career at Florida, but was not drafted because of off-field concerns.  Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Howard stopped 15 shots and Detroit scored four consecutive times to record a 4-2 victory over New Jersey on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. Jakub Kindl, Brendan Smith, Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall posted one score apiece for the Red Wings, who began a four-game homestand by erasing a three- game losing streak. Steve Bernier and Jordin Tootoo tallied a goal each for the Devils, who have lost three in a row and seven of 10 since beginning the season with three straight wins. Cory Schneider was pulled for the second straight contest, this time after giving up four goals on 24 shots in two periods. Keith Kinkaid stopped all seven shots he faced for the rest of regulation. They will also be able to access high-performance resources in the areas of sports science, sports medicine and coaching from either inside or outside of the CCA.  COLUMBUS, Ohio -- As one Argentine entered the scene with Toronto FC, another dealt the team a double blow as Columbus Federico Higuain scored twice to lead the Crew to a 2-0 victory over TFC on Saturday. Toronto was trailing 1-0 on Higuains 19th-minute goal when Maximiliano Urruti, a 22-year old Argentine striker who was signed Friday as TFCs third designated player, made his MLS debut in the 66th minute. "He hasnt done much in a while so we have to ease him in," TFC coach Ryan Nelsen said. "He got some valuable minutes." Urruti also got an up-close look at fellow countryman Higuain, who is six years older and in his first full season as a designated player with the Crew. He assured the victory when he sent a stunning chip over goalkeeper Joe Bendik in the 67th minute. The Crews Danny ORourke created a turnover at midfield. Higuain dribbled into the left channel then put the ball just under the crossbar into the far netting. "We gave it away in really poor areas," Nelsen said. "Hes probably most dangerous when the opposition has the ball. He gets in really nice areas, nice pockets. We gave it away and he made a really good effort. "If you look at their team, their DP makes a huge impact. We havent had that." Higuain has nine goals -- four in the past two matches -- as the Crew (8-11-5) won two in a row for the first time in nearly a year. "Hes done it to weeks in a row now," Toronto forward Jeremy Brockie said of Higuains chip. "Since Ive been here in the league, hes the best player in the league Ive seen and Columbus is lucky to have him." Bendiks five saves kept TFC (4-12-8) in the match, and Toronto forward Robert Earnshaw gave credit to their opponents following the loss. "Tactically, we have to give credit to (Columbus)," Earnshaw said. "They played well but at the same time we could have played better. They had good energy. Our energy could have been better. "It was one of those nights. They were much better than us." TFC did not have a shot on goal during the first 45 minutes of the match, but Nelsen implored his team at halftime to remember their last meeting on July 27 when Toronto shocked the Crew by scoring in the 87th minute and fourth minute of stoppage time for a 2-1 win at BMO Field. "We talked about that at halftime," Brockie said. "There were a few heads down in the training room and Ryan said to us, Look, we may be losing, we may be playing but one goal and were in it." Instead, the Crew, who won 1-0 at Toronto on May 18, took the season series and the Trillium Cup competition between the teams as TFC lost for the second match in a row after two straight wins. "We had a bad day at the office. They had a good day," Nelsen said. "Were not good enough where we can have an off day and get away with it. Hopefully, someday well be in that situation." He even addressed his group of relievers Sunday morning. Dustin McGowan made those worries a nonfactor, at least for a day. McGowan pitched three-hit ball for seven innings, Colby Rasmus hit a grand slam and Melky Cabrera added a two-run homer as the Blue Jays beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2. "We had to have that one," Gibbons said. McGowan (2-1) allowed one run, striking out five and throwing 101 pitches. It was the second consecutive quality start for McGowan, a diabetic who started wearing an insulin pump on the mound in his last start. "My blood sugar still gets erratic sometimes," he said. "But thats part of the game for me. With the adrenaline going and everything, it does what it wants to do. I cant control it sometimes." McGowan eclipsed the 100-pitch mark for the first time since June 27, 2008. "Thats two outings wearing that pump," Gibbons said. "Maybe theres something to that." It was just the fourth win in 13 games for Toronto, which prevented the Pirates from completing their first series sweep of the season. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle and first base coach Rick Sofield were ejected by plate umpire Greg Gibson at the end of the fourth inning for arguing a called third strike on Jordy Mercer. The strikeout stranded two runners and ended the inning. "I think it was pretty apparent that the low strike wasnt going to come into play," Hurdle said. "But the fact of the matter was it got to a point where I felt a pitch that hadnt been called a strike all day got called a strike in, for me, a very pivotal at-bat for us." Rasmus connected in the second inning for his fourth career slam. He also doubled and singled. The Blue Jays held on to this early lead. Toronto wasted a 5-3, ninth-inning edge in the series opener and a 5-0, fourth-inning advantage on Saturday night. Josh Harrison hit two triples for the Pirates. Edinson&nnbsp;Volquez (1-3) gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings.dddddddddddd. He also allowed six earned runs in his last outing April 21 against St. Louis. Volquez pitched himself into a jam in the second inning before Rasmus stepped to the plate, issuing walks to Edwin Encarnacion and Juan Francisco to start the inning. Brett Lawrie reached on an infield single to load the bases with no outs. Rasmus hit a full-count curveball about 10 rows deep in the right-field seats for his seventh home run of the season, giving the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead. Rasmus said he was not necessarily looking for an offspeed pitch in that situation. "I was just trying to be out over the plate and throw my hands at anything because hes got a good changeup, good curveball and a good two-seamer, and he already tried to thumb me a couple in," he said. "I was just trying to be ready to put something in play." The slam negated an early lead the Pirates built on Neil Walkers groundout, scoring Harrison after his triple. Harrison also tripled in the eighth and scored on Andrew McCutchens sacrifice fly. Torontos Jose Bautista walked in the fifth to reach base in his 31st consecutive game, the longest active streak in the majors. But he went hitless, snapping a career-best 13-game hitting streak. Cabrera had three hits, and extended Torontos lead to 6-1 with a two-run homer off Volquez in the fifth. Rasmus scored another run in the eighth on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Dioner Navarro. NOTES: Highly regarded Blue Jays RHP Marcus Stroman made his big league debut, allowing one earned run and one hit while getting two outs. The Blue Jays selected the 23-year-old Stroman Triple-A Buffalo and optioned OF Anthony Gose. ... The Pirates plan to recall LHP Jeff Locke to start against San Francisco on Monday night. An All-Star last year, Locke struggled in the second half of 2013 and did not make the Pirates opening day roster. ... J.A. Happ (0-0, 4.15) is scheduled to pitch for the Blue Jays at Philadelphia on Monday night. Wholesale Jerseys ' ' '

Winnipeg Jets 3 Detroit Red Wings 2 (Shootout) – A lot of interesting statistics out of this win. For the Jets it was their second straight shootout win, the third straight extra time loss for the Red Wings and in the last 10 games that the Wings have gone to extra time at home, they have not been able to get the extra point. Andrew Ladd again had the shootout winner. The Jets are now 4-1 in the shootout this season with Ladd getting the winner in the last three. (Dallas, San Jose, Detroit). Ladd is five for five in the shootout this year and going back to last year is seven for seven. Jussi Jokinen holds the NHL record with nine straight, Jarret Stoll has eight, then Ladd at seven. Ondrej Pavelec, brilliant in the game, stopped two of three in the shootout, and has now stopped eight of the last nine. Goaltending Coach Wade Flaherty feels patience is the key for Pavelec. “The shootout is a game of chicken, who will bite first. Hes more aggressive, holding his ground and as a result not folding into his net. Hes more relaxed.” For the first time this season the Jets have won three straight, and have won four of five to improve their record to 9-9-2 and move into fifth place in the Central Division. Bryan Little celebrated his birthday by opening the scoring in the game. The last three times the Jets have scored the first goal, Little has been the shooter. It was his team leading 11th goal of the year upping his totals to 3-2-5 in the last three games, 6-4-10 in the last eight and 8-4-12 in the last 11. Andrew Ladd picked up an assist on the goal giving him 2-7-9 in the last seven games. But it was a great pass from Blake Wheeler that Little converted. Pavel Datsyuk on a power play tied the game, the goal coming on Mark Scheifeles first NHL penalty. Red Wings outshot the Jets 16-8 in the first. No goals and no penalties in fast paced second, Detroit outshooting Winnipeg 10-9. Jets took the lead in the third, with Zach Bogosian getting his first of the year, assists to Evander Kane and Olli Jokinen.. Then the Jets ran into penalty trouble. Wheeler went for tripping, and on the penalty kill Kanes stick came up on Mikael Samuelson and for the fourth time this season the Jets were down two men. Datsyuk showed his magic hands again, knocking a James Wright clearing attempt out of mid-air to keep the puck in the Jets zone, and then putting a loose puck home to tie the game. The goal came one second after the penalty to Wheeler expired, allowing Kane to come out of the box as well. Jets are four for four this season when shorthanded two players. Wings outshot the Jets 16-2 in the third but as he was throughout the game, Pavelec was terrific. “Pavelec put his best foot forward and really helped us win,” commented Coach Claude Noel post game. The Jets got a power play in overtime but could not score, sending the game to the shootout. Pavelec challenged Datsyuk who fired wide, Devin Setoguchi scored and is now 9/19 in his career, Daniel Alfredson scored to tie the shootout, Ladd converted and is now 11/21 in his career, then Pavelec sealed the deal stopping Todd Bertuzzi. It was Ladds sixth career shootout winner. Final shots were 43-21 in favour of Detroit. Pavelec has now stopped 112 of his last 118 shots for three wins in his last three starts, for a save percentage of .949.  “It was a hard road game,” continued Coach Noel. “Their speed and skill gave us trouble in our end. Its a hard place to win. We were in good shape going into the third and even though we were outshot our attitude was tremendous. We are happy with four wins in five games. You never really see a streak coming, but you can see the attitude of your team change. Our team, the way we are, we need a lot of “A” games to have success. We stuck together. Team is coming together. Now we just keep building. We are confident in the shootout.” A busy and difficult schedule continues for the Jets. Philadelphia is at the MTS Centre Friday, Jets in Minnesota Sunday and home to Calgary Monday. (All games TSN Jets, TSN 1290) It will be three in four nights with the back to back games at the end of it. Friday also starts four of five at home and a chance to improve their home record. Friday also starts five games in nine days for the Jets. Fake 76ers Jerseys. You can, too, Clay Buchholz, if we ignore the sixth inning of Game 2. The suddenly-streaking Canes eye up a fifth straight victory on Saturday night as they visit the rival Washington Capitals. Carolina got off to the worst start in franchise history with eight straight defeats to open the campaign. However, the Hurricanes have now countered that 0-6-2 start with a four-game winning streak, one that was extended with last nights 3-2 overtime victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Elias Lindholm scored the winning goal with 38 seconds left in overtime. That came after Carolina had failed to score on its first six chances on the man advantage in the game. Victor Rask and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes, while Cam Ward stopped 29 shots in the win. We knew they were going to come back hungry, and they were, said Carolina forward Eric Staal. They played hard. It was physical and tight at times, but I liked the resiliency we showed. We stayed with it and continued to battle. Carolina now has a chance to win five straight for the first time since Dec. 31-Jan. 9 of last season and will give Anton Khudobin the start tonight. He is 3-1-0 lifetime versus the Capitals with a 2.74 goals against average and .913 save percentage. Washingtton will take aim at a second straight win as it halted a five-game slide with Friday nights 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks.dddddddddddd Braden Holtby made 38 saves and the Capitals scored three late goals in the second period. Joel Ward, Andre Burakovsky and Marcus Johansson scored in the final five minutes of the second period for the Capitals, who had posted an 0-4-1 mark over their slide. It just goes to show how fast things can turn around in a game, said Ward, whose winning goal came with 4.4 seconds left in the frame. It kind of got switched around for us because weve had a few games where weve had the lead and given it up. It is unknown if Holtby will start again tonight or if the Capitals will turn to former Hurricanes second-round draft pick Justin Peters. Holtby is 5-3-0 with a 2.23 GAA and .940 save percentage in his career versus the Hurricanes, who took drafted Peters in 2004. Peters made 68 appearances with 58 starts over parts of five seasons with Carolina. He played in a career-high 21 games last season, going 7-9-4 with a 2.50 GAA and .919 save percentage. The Hurricanes won three of their five meetings with the Capitals a season ago, with all three wins coming in Washington. They have won five of their past seven trips to D.C. overall.  PITTSBURGH, Pa. - For years William Gay kept quiet. About his remarkable story. About his sometimes erratic play. About the personal tragedy that shaped him. While the Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback still refuses to take credit for the best stretch of his career on the field, he understands the time has come for him to speak up about his life off it.Orphaned as a child when his mother was shot and killed by his stepfather, the player who spent so long ducking the spotlight is now embracing it. The 29-year-old is using the platform his job provides to offer hope for those who are searching for the kind of support his mother never found.Gay has developed a close relationship with the Womens Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, becoming the spokesman for an app designed to help people identify if they are a victim of domestic violence and connect them to a local hotline. Hes even taken to tweaking his game uniform if it gets people to understand there is a way out.I dont care about a sport when it comes down to domestic violence, he said. This is real. Someone can lose their life to it. So Im not concerned about the sport. Im concerned about what happens in the world, what happens in real life. Its Gays way of honouring his mother Carolyn, who died when Gay was in second grade following a dispute with her husband. Gay ended up being raised by his extended family and did what he could to keep strangers at a distance. Maturity and a compelling need for his mothers passing to make a difference in the lives of others led him to open up.When he premiered a Public Service Announcement to announce the RUSafe app in October, he was surrounded by coach Mike Tomlin and his teammates. The Steelers recognized Gay as their 2014 Walter Payton Man of the Year, an honour he does his best to downplay. Hes just a small part of a growing movement. My mother, she never had the opportunity, Gay said. What Im doing now, Im doing for her.Including occasionally wearing purple cleats, a colour closely associated with the anti-domestic violence movement. Gay donned the footwear twice last month, demanding people notice after a 33-yard interception return for a score against Indianapolis led to one of the giddiest touchdown dances in recent memory. It was a celebratory moment and a watershed one for the defensive back whose personal and professional lives have at long last found peace.Gay started the season as an insurance policy and has evolved into a vital member of an injury-ravaged secondary. He will play in his 124th consecutive game Sunday when the Steelers (7-4) host the New Orleans Saints (4-7). Hes already tied a career high with two interceptions, both of which ended with him streaking across the goal line for a game-turning score.Hes highly underrated, longtime teammate Ike Taylor said. Hes got more touchdowns than a lot of receivers. ... Hes gotten really comfortable with himself and its showing.Gay really didnt have much of a choice. He was thrust into the starting lineup when Taylor went down with a broken forearm in Week 3, then became the No. 1 cornerback when Cortez Allens struggles led to his benching. His steady play has helped Pittsburgh put together a 4-1 run to stay in the thick of the AFC North, though Gay sidesteps the notion he took on a greater leadership role with Taylor and safety Troy Polamalu sidelined.Really I didnt because Ike was everywhere, Gay said. Timeouts he was in the huddle. When we were on the field he was giving us tendencies. There was never a moment we were alone. For me to say, Ive got to do this; Ive got to be the bigger brother. No. We still had Ike. We still had Troy on the sideline. They made it easy. The last two months have also served as a redemption of sorts on the field. Gay spent the first five years of his career in Pittsburgh mostly as a nickelback, winning a Super Bowl ring but also receiving a fair share of the blame when things went wrong. He spent one forgettable season in Arizona in 2012 before returning home. Tobias Enstrom scored a power-play goal with 3:36 remaining in the third period to help the Winnipeg Jets deal a blow to San Joses chances to finish in first place by beating the Sharks 4-3 on Thursday night. "Weve let some teams that are not as good in the standings beat us and take points away, for whatever reason Im not sure," captain Joe Thornton said. The Sharks have lost six games since the Olympic break, all to teams that would not be in the playoffs if the season ended now. San Jose still holds a two-point lead over Anaheim in the Pacific Division but the Ducks have three games in hand. "We cant give away points," forward Joe Pavelski said. "Weve given away a few too many lately. They got the games in hand. If they do their job theyll be there but theres still quite a bit of hockey left." Dan Boyle, Brent Burns and Logan Couture scored for the Sharks, who have lost four of six. Antti Niemi made 27 saves for San Jose. Blake Wheeler added a goal and two assists for the Jets, who trail Phoenix by nine points in the race for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien also scored, and Al Montoya made 27 saves. "We talked about the playoff race for the first time tonight," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "Its a long hill to climb but this is the way we need to play every night." Couture scored the tying goal in the second period for San Jose but then committed the penalty that led to the game-winner when he shot the puck over the glass while trying to kill a penalty. The Sharks managed to kill 11 seconds of the 5-on-3 but couldnt kill the second penalty when Wheeler slid a pass to a pinching Enstrom, who beat Niemi. "Were a long shot coming into the building against arguably the best team in the league," Wheeler said. "We just tried to make one more play than they did and it worked out for us." The Jets took a 3-2 lead by scoring twice in the first 10 minutes of the secondd period.dddddddddddd The equalizer came early when Wheeler skated into the offensive zone and fired a bad-angle shot at Niemi from along the goal line that somehow sneaked into the net. Winnipeg took its first lead after Thornton negated a San Jose power play with a tripping penalty. Just seconds after Paul Postma came out of the box to give the Jets a power play, Wheeler slid a perfect pass to Byfuglien, who beat Niemi with a one-timer for his 20th goal. "Our power play was kind of sloppy but we were able to pull together a couple of times and set it up," Ladd said. "I wanted to come here, have a good effort and give ourselves a chance to win, and we did that." The Sharks tied it later in the second when they capitalized on another power-play chance. James Sheppards slap shot deflected off Coutures thumb and into the net to give San Jose its fifth power-play goal in two games. Couture also got his 20th goal in his return to the lineup after missing one game with an injury from blocking a shot on Monday in Calgary. The Sharks opened the scoring less than 2 minutes into the game when Sheppard sent a pass from the point that deflected off Marty Havlats stick and right to Boyle, who beat Montoya with a backhand for his first goal in 30 games. The Jets answered just 36 seconds later when Ladd put in a rebound of Michael Froliks shot for his 22nd goal. It came in Ladds first game back after missing Mondays tilt in Dallas for the birth of his daughter. "Theres a little bit of energy in the building, and bang its gone," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "They come right back down and score and we have to start all over. That was probably a bit of a turning point, may have been an indication of things to come." San Jose went back in front late in the period on Burns power-play goal.  PASADENA, Calif. -- Linebacker Myles Jack ran for four touchdowns, defensive end Cassius Marsh caught a scoring pass, and No. 13 UCLA stayed in control of its destiny in the Pac-12 South race with a 41-31 victory over Washington on Friday night. Devin Lucien turned a short pass into a 40-yard TD with 9:57 to play, and the Bruins (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) got creative to hold off a lively challenge from the Huskies (6-4, 3-4), who lost starting quarterback Keith Price to a shoulder injury right before halftime. Jack followed up his 120-yard debut at running back last week by becoming the 13th player in UCLA history to score four touchdowns. Cyler Miles passed for 149 yards after replacing Price, but the Huskies have lost nine of their last 12 Pac-12 road games. Damoreea Stringfellow, Jaydon Mickens and Austin Seferian-Jenkins caught TD passes for Washington, which hasnt beaten UCLA at the Rose Bowl since 1995. For the second straight week, Bruins offensive co-ordinator Noel Mazzone dipped into the defences roster to win an exhilarating meeting of two bowl-bound teams with prolific offences. Jack, the Bruins remarkable freshman from a Seattle suburb, finished with the most rushing TDs since Maurice Jones-Drew set the school record with five scores in 2004. Jack and the hulking Marsh scored the Bruins first five touchdowns as UCLA stayed right behind division leader Arizona State, which visits Pasadena next weekend. UCLA coach Jim Mora had been coy about whether Jack would even play offence again, but the freshman jumped in during the Bruins opening series, rushing for an 8-yard score on his first carry. Used mostly as a short-yardage back, he added two more scores in the first half and finished with 60 yards on 12 carries. Oh, and he also made five tackles. Brett Hundley passed for 159 yards for the Bruins, who led 27-7 early in the second quarter and were up 34-24 heading to the fourth. The Huskies kept it close despite losing their starting quarterback on a hit late in the second quarter. Miles, a redshirt freshman, had played only sparingly this season behind Price, a three-year starter who holds Washingtons career record for touchdown passes. Miles went 15 for 22, but threw two interceptions on consecutive throws in the final minutes. Stringfellow, a freshman with three catches all year, had eight receptions for 147 yards and a score with 8:01 to play. He also had a long TD catch wiped out in the first half by one of Washingtons 11 penalties for 113 yards. Bishop Sankey rushed for 91 yards and a score for the Huskies, who dropped to 7-20 on the road during coach Steve Sarkisians five seasons. The Bruins wore their black "L.A. Midnight" uniforms on a rare Friday night game at the Rose Bowl, but the stadium was roughly half-full at kickoff while fans struggled through Los Angeles usual Friday traffic. UCLA still led 14-0 less than six minutes in on two short scoring drives set up by Huskies turnovers. Jordan Zumwalt forced Seferian-Jenkins fumble on Washingtons opening series, and Jack rumbled for UCLAs first score just 2:38 in. Marsh then caught his 2-yard play-action TD pass on a short drive set up by Sankeys fumble near midfield. After the Huskies made a 95-yard scoring drive capped by Sankeys TD run, Washington could have recovered a fumble by Jack after a 25-yard run -- but Shaq Thompson failed to fall on the ball. Two plays later, Jack scored from 1 yard out. Jacks third TD surge put the Bruins up by 20 points, but the Huskies finally answered with Mickens short TD catch 6:11 before halftime set up by Malcolm Jones fumble. Price left the field grimacing after his final snap of the first half, and he returned to the sideline in the third quarter in a warmup suit and cap. Miles showed no nerves while leading the Huskies on a 26-yard scoring drive after UCLA fumbled the second-half kickoff, hitting Seferian-Jenkins for a score. But UCLA answered with Jacks fourth TD run, this time from 2 yards out. UCLAs defence had much more success against Miles, repeatedly stopping the Huskies on third downs. Washington successfully faked a punt and had a field goal attempt blocked later in the third quarter, but couldnt move consistently. After UCLA stopped the Huskies on fourth down with about 10 minutes left, Lucien turned a short reception into a 40-yard score with a sprint through the secondary, putting the Bruins back up by 17. It took a while to know if that would be good enough for a win. In the seventh, Evan Gattis finally came through. Gattis hit a tiebreaking homer off outfielder-turned-pitcher Jason Lane and that was all Santana and the Atlanta Braves needed, beating San Diego 2-0 on Monday for their third straight win. "Ive got you on the plane," Santana jokingly told Gattis, as they prepared to leave on a West Coast road trip. "Ill get you anything you want." Santana (10-6) threw five-hit ball over eight innings, matching his career high with 11 strikeouts. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 32nd save. "I kept everybody off balance with the slider," Santana said. "That was one of the keys." Gattis led off the seventh with his first homer since June 18, before he went on the disabled list for nearly three weeks with a bulging disk in his back. He also drove in Atlantas other run with a two-out single off Dale Thayer in the eighth. "Hes a great hitter," teammate Andrelton Simmons said of Gattis. "Hes going to get back to doing what he was doing at the beginning of the year." Called up from Triple-A to fill in for ailing Ian Kennedy, Lane (0-1) shut down the Braves through six innings. But when the 37-year-old left-hander hung an 0-1 slider, Gattis drove it into the left-field seats for his 17th homer of the season. "Its a little frustrating to make a mistake like that," said Lane, who was making his first big league start as a pitcher. "Theres not a lot of room for error. And it cost me." Lane was a journeyman outfielder with Houston and the Padres from 2002-07. He became a full-time pitcher before thee 2012 season, looking to get back to the big leagues in a different position.dddddddddddd He threw 4 1-3 scoreless innings for San Diego in two June relief appearances, and extended his scoreless streak to 10 1-3 innings before Gattis long ball. He threw out Venable by a step. "An average shortstop makes that play," Simmons quipped.  PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has coined a phrase for where star centre fielder Andrew McCutchen is at the moment. "(Hes) McHot," Hurdle said. For once, it might be an understatement. The reigning National League MVP had two doubles and two RBIs to lift the Pirates to a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night. McCutchen is batting .428 (18 of 42) this month, with 15 of his hits going for extra bases. "Im seeing the ball and I get a pitch to hit and I hit it and its finding the gaps and thats basically whats happening right now for me," said McCutchen, a career .324 hitter in June. "Things are just working out right now and I want to continue to stay where Im at." Russell Martin also doubled twice for the Pirates and rookie Gregory Polanco got a hit in the third straight game since his call-up. Edinson Volquez (4-5) pitched seven effective innings to win for the third time in his last five starts. Volquez struck out five and walked two while outpitching Chicago ace Jeff Samardzija (2-6). It helped the Cubs could do little when given the chance. Chicago went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. "He was commanding the zone like he does when he is in a good place and we were on the other side of it," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said of Volquez. McCutchen broke it open with a two-run double in the fifth. The Pirates had seven doubles in all, their highest total since a win over Houston in July 2010. "The next team that comes in here is probably better off pitching around him and letting him go to first base," Samardzija said. Luis Valbuena had two doubles for the Cubs, who went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position to fall for the fourth time in five games. The Cubs have scored two runs or fewer in nine of Samardzijas 14 starts. Chicagos troubles werent just on offence on a night the worst road team in baseball fell to 0-9-3 in series played away from Wrigley Field this year. Samardzija struggled against a team that seems to be rounding into form behind its star centre fielder. McCutchen extended his hitting streak to eight straight by doubling with one out in the fourth before coming around to score when Martin smacked a ball off the wall in right field. Ike Davis scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Jordy Mercer to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Pittsburgh made it 4-0 in the fifth when Polanco -- batting leadoff for the first time -- and Starling Marte hit consecutive singles followed by drive by McCutchen to the notch in left-centre. McCutchen slid into the third on the play before making a rare mental miscue when he stepped off the base, allowing him to get tagged out in the process. "I guess thats why they say stay humble in this game, because crazy stuff like that will happen," McCutchen said. "Popping up, getting all excited and next thing you know Im floating all over the bag and his glove is right there so thats why you stay humble." It hardly mattered. The Cubs were too busy wasting chances to get to Volquez, who has suddenly emerged as a constant on Pittsburghs injury muddled pitching staff. After a bumpy patch in early May, Volquez is 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA in his last five starts.
